Today I would like to bring attention to other musicians/vocalists like Danilo Perez, D.D. Jackson, Derrick Gardner, Dianne Reeves, Eliane Elias and Elijah Jamal Balbed.

Enjoy ~

1. (40) Born in Panama in 1965, pianist Danilo Perez started his musical studies at just three years of age with his father, a bandleader and singer. By age 10, he was studying the European classical piano repertoire at the National Conservatory in Panama.

Perez moved to the United States after receiving his bachelor’s degree in electronics. He initially enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. But, after changing his major to music, he transferred to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. While completing his studies in jazz composition from 1985-88, he performed with Jon Hendricks, Terence Blanchard, Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera.

Since the late ‘80s, he has toured and/or recorded with Wayne Shorter, Steve Lacy, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, John Patitucci, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton, and Roy Haynes.

2. (41) A native of Vancouver (and former member of the Montreal jazz scene), composer and bandleader  Darcy James Argue moved to Brooklyn in 2003 after earning a Master’s Degree in Boston while studying with legendary composer/arranger Bob Brookmeyer. He has also studied with Lee Hyla, Randall Woolf, Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck.

His awards include the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop Charlie Parker Composition Prize and the SOCAN/CAJE Phil Nimmons Emerging Composer Award and he has received grants from the Jerome Foundation, the American Music Center, Meet The Composer, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and the Canada Council for the Arts, among others.

The Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, an 18 piece steampunk big band, was founded in 2005.

3. (42) Trumpeter, composer, bandleader and sideman Dave Douglas was born in New York City (1963). His music is notable for drawing on many non-jazz musical styles, including classical music, European folk music and klezmer. He has been a member of the experimental big band Orange Then Blue. Douglas is currently the director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which is held annually in New York City. He has long been associated with John Zorn and his Masada Quartet.

4. (43)  Dave Holland Amid endless choices, the sound of a Dave Holland bass line compels attention. A master of tone and rhythm, the bassist, composer, and bandleader is now in his fifth decade as a performer and his music possesses a rich and kaleidoscopic history.  His path has led him from the frontiers of free improvisation to his modern ensembles that fully embody the Sam Rivers-instilled philosophy of “playing all of it.”

The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the trumpet legend’s epochal Bitches Brew period. His octet’s debut album “Pathways” was released at the end of March 2010.

5. (44) David Marriott, Jr. has been described by one reviewer as a "canny and imaginative player whose solos display an extraordinary sense of architecture and conception".  This two-time Earshot Golden Ear Award winning trombonist is a musician for the next generation - equally at home as a performer, composer, arranger, and educator. David is co-leader, with brother Thomas, of the Marriott Jazz Quintet, which gained early acclaim for its first CD, Open Season (1997).

6. (45) D.D. Jackson is a Juno-Award-winning jazz pianist/composer whose work spans 12 CDs as leader or co-leader (including two for the major label RCA Victor/BMG) featuring almost entirely original material. He was previously named the Downbeat Critics Poll #1 Talent Deserving Wider Recognition for Piano.

7. (46) Dee Dee Bridgewater  is a two-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, as well as a Tony Award - winning stage actress and host of National Public Radio's syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. She is also a United Nations Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Ms. Bridgewater's latest album "Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee" was released in early March 2010.

8. (47) Derrick Gardner is a trumpeter born 3 June 1965 in the Windy City.  A music critic describes his playing as “Soulful and intelligent, a tremendous talent with a vivid and unusual imagination”.  Another describes his playing as “having a way of moving past the notes in a solo and getting into formal realms that make sense and heighten interest.”

9. (48) Grammy award winning pianist and vocalist Diana Krall was born in Nanaimo, BC (1964). She is known for her contralto vocals. Krall is a three time Grammy-Award winner.

10. (49) Vocalist Dianne Reeves was born in Detroit but grew up in Denver. As a child Dianne took piano lessons and sang at every opportunity. Her uncle, Charles Burrell, a bass player with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, introduced her to the music of jazz singers, from Ella Fitzgerald to Billie Holiday. She was especially impressed by Sarah Vaughan.

Ms. Reeves released her 1st Blue Note Records album “Never Too Far” in 1990. She is known for both her live performances as much as her albums. Reeves is considered one of the most important contemporary jazz singers.

11. (50) The Dred Scott Trio - Dred Scott grew up in St. Louis, went to college in Ohio, but the San Francisco Bay area will always be home.  He gained a reputation there as an innovative and eclectic pianist. Scott is a co-founder of the ground breaking hip-hop jazz group, Alphabet Soup. He has recorded with Anthony Braxton, Cecil Mcbee, Andrew Cyrille, Joe Morello, Charlie Hunter, Bob Mintzer, Dave Samuels, Don Byron, Paul Mccandless, Marshall Crenshaw.  Currently, the DS trio is  based in New York City and regularly performs every Tuesday at midnight at the Rockwood Music Hall.

12. (51) Pianist, vocalist, arranger and songwriter Eliane Elias was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1960). Her music is readily recognizable by her use of jazz harmonies, her rich blending of rhythmic styles and her voice.

13. (52) Saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed has established himself as one of the top young players in the Washington, DC area. He is also a member of the Howard University Jazz Ensemble and Jazztet. The Elijah Jamal Experience can be heard on U Street every Saturday night at Utopia (11:30pm-2:30am) and every Wednesday at Cafe Nema (8pm-midnight).

He was named 2010 Best New DC Jazz Artist by Washington City Paper!
