What Critics are Saying About The Mosaic Project:

"A veteran jazz drummer with a knack for literate funk, Terri Lyne Carrington has her fifth such album, "The Mosaic Project" (Concord), due out on Tuesday. It comes with a strong concept: all the 20-odd musicians featured are women, from the pianist Helen Sung to the percussionist Sheila E. The caliber of these artists speaks for itself; there's no sense of compromise here, or of an agenda limiting the options. And Ms. Carrington, who produced the album, brings accessibility and continuity to the listening experience."

Nate Chinen, New York Times

"Considering how much men dominate the jazz world, drummer Carrington's Mosaic would be noteworthy just for its all-female assemblage of talent. But what the 21 stellar musicians and vocalists have accomplished is a soulful, moving work that would stand out regardless of the artists' gender. Carrington has blended the skills of these wonderfully gifted performers and created something that is, as Cassandra Wilson sings, Simply Beautiful."

Steve Jones, USA Today

"Women have made big strides in jazz since local heroine Terri Lyne Carrington came onto the scene nearly three decades ago. Consider the drummer-composer-Berklee professor's new album, The Mosaic Project. It features several prominent female vocalists, and all the instrumentalists are women. The fresh-sounding album of contemporary jazz laced with pop, soul, funk, and fusion influences includes Gretchen Parlato's breathy takes on Carrington's reinterpretations of Irving Berlin's 'I Got Lost in His Arms' and the Beatles' 'Michelle'; Cassandra Wilson's succulent cover of Al Green's 'Simply Beautiful'; Esperanza Spalding's playful 'Crayola'; three Nona Hendryx contributions (one sung by Dee Dee Bridgewater); and 'Magic and Music,' Carrington's vocal tribute to the late Teena Marie. 'Mosaic Triad' is the standout instrumental track. Then there's the politically charged centerpiece, 'Echo,' which features civil rights commentary from activist Angela Davis and vocals by the always superlative Dianne Reeves. It's strong, supple stuff by a strong bunch of women."
