The Old is New Once Again: Jazz in Review – 2013

For me, the 2013 year of Jazz continues where 2012 left off – it’s an amazing "space" to be in to experience an ever-changing kaleidoscope of sound.  One of the aspects of Jazz that I truly love is its ability to embrace the old and the new, avant-garde and mainstream projects that a wide swath of music lovers can embrace.

Cécile McLorin SalvantA number of debut releases resonated with fans everywhere this year – on the radio, via downloads, and on Twitter and Facebook. People wanted to know who the “new guy” was, the one that played the piano with such dexterity and charm? That turned out to be pianist and composer Aaron Diehl, who had his debut release with Indie record label powerhouse, Mack Avenue, this year entitled, The Bespoke Man’s Narrative.

Many aficionados did double-takes when they first heard the expressiveness and range of GRAMMY-nominated Cécile McLorin Salvant’s aurally satisfying debut WomanChild. She channels the best of vocalists from a bygone era but is definitely a modern singer with a 21st century vibe.

Update ☛ Press Conference Scheduled Monday to Protest Elimination of 31 GRAMMY Categories

On Monday, 9th May 2011, Yoshi’s world famous jazz club in Oakland, California, will host a press conference held by artists, presenters and media to voice opposition to the recent announcement by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) to eliminate Latin Jazz and many other styles of music from GRAMMY consideration.

If you're not aware of what NARAS did last month to 28% of the GRAMMY categories, please read my original blog post.

One of my main go-to sources for all things Latin Jazz is bassist and educator Chip Boaz's blog The Latin Jazz Corner. I read Chip's blog years before I even thought about starting my own site. He is a wealth of information and is generous with his knowledge. The following is an excerpt from Chip's website:

Donna in Los Angeles for the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards - Day 1

There is so much that I want to share with you! Okay - Here's Day 1:

Hilton Checkers HotelI was one of the first Community Bloggers to arrive at our "home away from home" for the next four nights. The downtown boutique hotel that we were staying at is owned and operated by Hilton Hotels (@HiltonOnline). It's a historic hotel that dates back to the 1920s, fully restored to its original splendor.

The Hilton staff was professional, courteous, and amazing. They all made it seem effortless. Really. I can't say enough about how well the staff treated me. :)

The GRAMMYs and MusicIsLifeisMusic.com

Have you heard about the GRAMMYs new Android/iPhone app?

Screenshot from my MILIM account"Music is Life is Music is a digital platform that connects music to the milestones of life. By using the MusicMapper app to tag songs and stories to physical locations, we're able to express how music transports us back to special times and places in a way never before possible. And by displaying these tags through the microsite, we can experience each other's musical journey in a uniquely intimate way. Providing an innovative glimpse at how Music Is Life Is Music."
