50 Festivals & Places to See Jazz Live [Part I]

✺Good morning✺

I hope that you all had a great weekend!

You've discovered a couple of artists that you like during the past 2.5 weeks (from the "JAM 2010: 156 Artists for a New Jazz Experience" series. You have even looked for and downloaded some of their music (don't try to deny it, you know you did fighting smileys). One of the thoughts that has crossed your mind is, "I really like what I'm hearing. Where do I go to see them perform live?"

That's easy to answer because jazz is all around you ~ it could be at an upcoming jazz festival or at a jazz club/venue in your town or city.

This list is by no means complete nor exhaustive. I wanted to give you a general idea of where jazz is so that you can get to see it performed live!

Enjoy ~

1. 21st Annual AT&T San Jose Jazz Festival will be 13-15 August 2010. I checked the website and there isn't a list of performing artists uploaded yet. Please check back with them at a later time to see the schedule for this year's festival.

2. Philadelphia's Museum of Art has hosted "Art After 5" on most Friday evenings for a few years. From the website - "With an eclectic mix of international music on the first Friday of each month, and recognized and emerging jazz artists performing all other Fridays, it’s a stylish way to start your weekend." The performances are held in the ☜ Great Stair Hall. It's a cool place to hang. I did it while I was still in Philly.

Coming this week on Friday, April 23rd ~ Wayne Shorter! He'll be premiering a new composition inspired by the Museum’s collection! Don't sleep on this!

  3. 33rd Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival will be 29 & 30 May 2010.

This year's schedule includes performances by Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Esperanza Spalding, Marcus Miller "Tutu Revisited - The Music of Miles Davis" featuring Christian Scott, Spyro Gyra, Stanley Clarke and Hiromi.

Atlanta also hosts "31 Days of Jazz" for the entire month of May! If you're in the area, definitely make it a point to visit the ATL for some great jazz events!

 4. AXIS 5th Annual Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival was held in Indonesia 5-7 March 2010.

5. Toronto, ON, Canada's 22nd Annual Beaches Jazz Festival is 16-25 July 2010.

6. The Bimhuis in Amsterdam, NL provides a perspective on Dutch and international music in over 300

concerts annually, in which a variety of jazz and improvised music can be enjoyed. The focus is on new developments, but the Bimhuis also offers a significant selection of mainstream music. The original Bimhuis opened in 1974.

7. The newest incarnation of NYC’s legendary Birdland Jazz Club was opened in 1986. The Dave Holland Quintet will be performing from Tues thru Sat, April 20-24, 2 sets 8:30 & 11PM.

8. In Washington, DC, Blues Alley Supper Club opened in 1965. According to the NY Times it is “the  nation’s finest jazz and supper club.”

TONIGHT (April 19, 2010) at Blues Alley will be the Dave Brubeck Quartet ~ one set only! at 8PM.

 9. North Bend, WA has a new jazz club and restaurant and it’s called Boxley’s!

10. Cape Town, South Africa held its 11th International Jazz Festival 3rd & 4th April 2010.
