Gabriel Johnson Biography
After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music, jazz trumpeter Gabriel Johnson honed his sound while playing and recording with jazz, R&B, and Classical artists, including Chris Botti, Jill Scott, Diddy, Jackie Evancho, David Foster, Placido Domingo, and B.o.B, to name a few. In 2007, Johnson had a career turning point when filmmaker and jazz enthusiast Clint Eastwood heard his playing and remarked: “You’ve got a great sound. I’m working on this movie [Changeling] and I think you could be right for it.” Johnson’s solo was part of the end title and the score earned a Golden Globes nomination. Eastwood invited Johnson to solo again in his next film, Invictus, a biopic of Nelson Mandela and South Africa’s rugby team.
During this period, Johnson began writing and arranging songs for his debut album, Introducing Gabriel Johnson.
Johnson's debut album released September 2012 is comprised of 10 original compositions and his spin on three covers, including a brooding version of Radiohead’s Codex and a melancholy take on the time-honored classic, Summertime. Throughout the record Johnson’s trumpet soars front-and-center, showcasing his melodic creativity, infectious compositions and beautiful trumpet sound.
