Living Colour Drummer Will Calhoun Returns to His Jazz Roots on Upcoming Album "Life In This World" Available on May 14!

PRESS RELEASE

Before he became famous as a member of the groundbreaking hard rock group Living ColourWill Calhoun was an aspiring jazz drummer raised on a steady diet of his father's bebop records. Calhoun goes back to his roots on his latest album, Life In This World - but to get there he takes a circuitous route through a wealth of musical experience around the globe. From studies with master musicians in Africa to experiments with electronic music in his home studio, Calhoun's adventurous sonic imagination couldn't help but expand the horizons of a stellar jazz recording which pairs the drummer with greats including Wallace Roney, Donald Harrison, Charnett Moffett, Marc Cary, Doug Wimbish, John Benitez and legendary bassist Ron Carter.

"Life In This World is a spiritual title," Calhoun says, "which to me just means the sonic world of my experiences. It's Will Calhoun in the sense of what influences me and what inspires me, but aimed more towards a jazz audience."

PRESS RELEASE

Curtis Brothers - Completion of ProofBrothers Luques (bass) and Zaccai (piano) Curtis follow in the rich family tradition of jazz. The music has often been the beneficiary of sibling bonds. Look no further than the Adderley brothers (Cannonball & Nat), the Heath Brothers (Percy, Jimmy, and Albert (Tootie), the Brecker Brothers, or more recently the Roney brothers (Wallace & Antoine), the Parrott sisters (Nicki and Lisa), and the Jensen sisters (Christine & Ingrid). Jazz music has frequently been the family tie that binds. And as with the Curtis Brothers those are also siblings that recorded and performed together. Based on the brilliance of Completion of Proof, clearly Luques and Zaccai Curtis have joined that auspicious tradition.

The Making of The Curtis Brothers' "Completion of Proof" Album

Luques and Zaccai CurtisDuring the past few weeks, I've thought about doing this as a regular feature for the blog.

It's a win-win situation for everyone. The artists creating the music get the message out about their project to more people. The readers of the blog get to find out about new music and support the creation of it! YAY!

Kickstarter Project of the Week:

"Completion of Proof" Album by the Curtis Brothers.

The first time I saw bassist Luques Curtis perform live was approximately 4.5 years ago in New York City as a member of Sean Jones' quintet. I remember thinking to myself how his playing of the double bass made me aware of it and kept my attention. I know that's not a profound statement but I do know that prior to that evening, I would rarely focus on the upright bass at a live show.

[That was then, this is now - I discovered the music of Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Christian McBride, Jasper Hoiby and Ms. Esperanza Spalding so I'm good now. :)]

I've never had the pleasure of seeing composer and pianist Zaccai Curtis live but I have checked out Curtis Brothers' YouTube videos over the past couple of years. They are adept at playing straight-ahead  and latin jazz with equal aplomb.
