Worldwide Wednesday: Drummer Antonio Sanchéz

Born in Mexico City in 1971, Antonio Sanchéz  started playing drums at the age of 5 and began performing professionally early in his teens.

He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico. In 1993 he moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music and graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies.

Since his move to New York City, Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Pat Metheny (He's a member of the Pat Metheny Group and the Pat Metheny Trio with Christian McBride), Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielemans.

Worldwide Wednesdays Series: Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen

Jazz trumpeter Ingrid Jensen has always been fighting stereotypes. "When you look like I look -- a blond, white chick from Canada -- you're not supposed to sound the way I sound." (npr.org)

"Ingrid plays trumpet and flugelhorn with all the brilliance and fire of a true virtuoso, following the spirit of the muse as she creates… …warm, sensitive, exciting and totally honest….." Marian McPartland

Jazz: Worldwide Wednesdays Series ~ Kairos 4tet

"Worldwide Wednesdays" is an occasional series where I feature artists that were born outside of America.

Today I would like to introduce you to a quartet that goes by the name of Kairos 4tet! (Yes, the "4" is an official part of the group's name.) The members are Adam Waldmann (saxophones), Ivo Neame (piano), Jasper Høiby (bass) and Jon Scott (drums).

"Formed in the spring of 2008 to play the original compositions of saxophonist Adam Waldmann, Kairos 4tet features some of the UK's most talented, young instrumentalists.

From ferocious grooves to plaintive, soaring melodies with an emphasis on rhythmically engaging, communicative lyricism - Kairos 4tet's collective spirit was recently put to "tape" for their debut album "Kairos Moment". With radio play including Jazz FM and Jez Nelson's BBC Jazz on 3, it is the opening account of a band already winning rave reviews."
