World Wide Wednesday: Bassist Avishai Cohen

✺Good morning✺

Today I'm going to tell you a little about an Israeli-born musician named Avishai Cohen. Once again, YouTube was instrumental in helping me discover Avishai's creativity as a composer, vocalist and bassist.

Who is Avishai Cohen?

"Avishai Cohen speaks as a citizen of the world. He’s a street-wise player, born in Israel and raised in St. Louis, MO who learned to hold his own in Greenwich Village jazz clubs and Latin joints in the Bronx.

In 1996, his brash and confident playing style landed him one of the most coveted gigs in jazz—the bass chair with Chick Corea. Since leaving Corea’s band in 2003, Cohen has consistently danced on the bridge between contemporary jazz and world music..."

World Wide Wednesday: Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery

❁Good morning❁

I skipped "World Wide Wednesday" last week but now I'm back on track. If you're not sure what that phrase means, it's when I feature a jazz artist that wasn't born in America (typically on Wednesdays).

Cool? Okay, let me get started.

Today I would like to introduce you to a London-born tenor saxophonist that I discovered, where else? On that treasure-trove of a website - YouTube. (Yes, I know that there's a lot of junk on there, but I've found it to be a great resource for jazz videos.)

“His sound is arguably a contemporary mix of Coltrane, Shorter and Henderson influences, but is already personal... His technique is superb...” Tony Hall, Jazzwise Magazine

World Wide Wednesday: Trumpeter Etienne Charles

*Good morning*

This is the 2nd "tradition" that I’m resurrecting from my time spent on Twitter. Every Wednesday I would present the music of jazz artists that were born outside of the United States. I simply called it “World Wide” Wednesday.

Today I am starting with a trumpeter that I saw perform last October in NYC at the Lincoln Center, Etienne Charles.

Enjoy ~
